Vacuum Hot Press Services for Metals
Vacuum Hot Pressing (VHP) is a materials processing technique used to manufacture dense, high-quality metals, ceramics, and composites. We carefully manufacture metal alloys, cermets, and silicides that can’t be produced using melting techniques. The process applies heat and high pressure in a vacuum environment to sinter or bond materials together, resulting in improved mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties.
At VEM, our vacuum hot press services support both proof-of-concept work and pilot line production. Whether you’re developing a new material or scaling up an existing process, our team works with you to deliver a solution suited to your project’s specifications.

Vacuum Hot Press Services for Metals
Manufacture high purity metals, ceramics, composites, cernets and alloys with improved properties and minimized contamination.
Benefits of Vacuum Hot Pressing.
Vacuum hot pressing offers several advantages over traditional sintering or hot-pressing methods conducted in normal atmospheres:
Minimized Oxidation and Contamination
Eliminating atmospheric gas during processing reduces the risk of oxidation and contamination.
Lower-Temperature Densification
Vacuum conditions allow for densification at lower temperatures, helping maintain finer microstructures.
Reduced Porosity
Lower-temperature processing also helps reduce the potential for porosity in the finished material.
Reduced Particle Formation
This process significantly lowers the risk of particles forming and falling onto a customer’s substrate, an important factor for sensitive applications.
Why Use Vacuum Hot Press Services?
Toll vacuum hot press services give organizations access to specialized hot-pressing capabilities without the cost of investing in dedicated equipment and infrastructure. This is especially useful for producing cutting-edge PVD materials for markets like semiconductor manufacturing, data storage, and optical coatings, where material purity and consistency are critical.
Our Services Include
Proof-of-Concept Runs
Ideal for early-stage material development and testing.
Pilot Line Production
Supporting scale-up from initial concept to production-ready volumes.
Custom Material Processing
Tailored processing of metals, ceramics, composites, cermets, silicides, and alloys based on your specifications.
Our Vacuum Hot Press Process
Every project begins with a review of the customer’s material requirements and production goals, followed by a general process that includes:
Material Review
Our team evaluates material specifications, composition requirements, and project objectives to determine the right approach for your material.
Loading and Vacuum Preparation
Powders or materials are loaded into the press and the chamber is brought to vacuum conditions to eliminate atmospheric gases before processing begins.
Vacuum Hot Pressing
Heat and high pressure are applied under vacuum to sinter or bond the material, supporting densification while minimizing oxidation, contamination, and porosity.
Cooling and Removal
The pressed material is cooled and removed from the press under controlled conditions to help preserve its structural integrity.
Delivery
Finished material is prepared and delivered according to your project specifications.

VEM’s Unique History with Vacuum Hot Pressing
Our founder, Jack Kavanaugh, developed a long-lasting friendship with Ken Haselden in the mid-1980s. Ken was one of the early pioneers in the PVD materials world. He built hot presses for his own materials company, Haselden Engineering, and developed revolutionary methods for blending and mixing metallic and ceramic powders. Ken designed the very first hot press for VEM in 2000.
